Project Gigabit in Your Area
Project Gigabit is the Government’s programme to bring fast, reliable broadband to hard-to-reach communities, the homes and businesses which aren’t currently included in broadband suppliers’ commercial rollout plans. It aims to connect these areas with gigabit-capable broadband, offering download speeds of up to 1,000 megabits per second, far faster than most standard connections. The programme is managed by Building Digital UK, (BDUK) part of the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology.
Earlier this year, the Government announced that around 18,000 new premises across Cheshire and Warrington are due to be connected by Project Gigabit. Over £37m is due to be invested into improving the connectivity of the region. For residents and businesses in these areas, it could mean being able to work from home, stream, video-call family, and access online services without the frustration of a slow or unreliable connection.

Project Gigabit network update – Cheshire
In February 2026, BDUK agreed a contract change with Openreach to include premises in this area within a new Project Gigabit contract (call‑off eight). Through call‑off eight, BDUK has awarded Openreach £37.5 million to deliver gigabit‑capable broadband to around 18,500 hard‑to‑reach premises across Cheshire.
