Vouchers to subsidise gigabit broadband installation

For residents and businesses locally, gigabit broadband is essential, from increasing productivity in a workplace or whilst working from home, every day essential browsing and streaming, enabling cloud computing and advanced technologies, gigabit broadband provides more opportunities for businesses, entrepreneurs and residents to do more online.

Where businesses and residents can’t currently access a gigabit broadband solution the Government’s Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme can be used to subsidise the cost of installing a gigabit solution. Rural residents and businesses are eligible for up to £4,500, subject to the below criteria:

  • A gigabit capable network isn’t likely to be built to that area commercially in the near future
  • There is no government-funded contract planned or in place to improve the network already
  • Existing broadband speeds are less than 100Mbps

Additional subsidy for below 30mbps

Rural communities, residents, and businesses who currently can only access speeds of less than 30mbps will be eligible for top-up vouchers subsidised by the Connecting Cheshire partnership, unless the area and premises in question are part of an already committed delivery plan to install fibre.

This additional subsidy is a top-up allocation of funding which adds to the total amount available, making community fibre projects more affordable.

The Scheme is administered by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) and not Cheshire East Council. No separate application is required as eligible properties will receive the top-up funding when benefiting from a Gigabit Broadband Voucher through a registered supplier.
