Digital Cheshire helps local communities with their connectivity

Tired of buffering videos due to unreliable internet? Does access to broadband connectivity limit your ability to book an appointment? Unable to access vital banking services because of poor connectivity?

That’s where Digital Cheshire comes in.

The Digital Cheshire Programme drives digital adoption and rural network delivery to create a gigabit-connected and inclusive sub-region across Cheshire, Warrington and Halton.

Collaborating with Building Digital UK & Internet Service Providers, this initiative supports the delivery of gigabit broadband to communities by 2030, bridging the digital divide for rural businesses and residents.

Through the development of a strategic partnership and harnessing collaboration with its four local council partners; Cheshire East, Cheshire West & Chester, Warrington Borough, and Halton Borough—the Partnership has made remarkable progress since its launch. The initiative has successfully connected over 100,000 premises and continued to secure funding for broadband investment to transform digital infrastructure across the region.

Having relationships with commercial suppliers and a level of understanding of their commercial delivery plans allows the Digital Cheshire team to support local residents and businesses through a comprehensive range of initiatives relating to broadband connectivity and digital and business support.

This includes access to government-funded contracts and connectivity through Project Gigabit, delivering a community-based voucher scheme for those in rural areas, alternative technology grants, digital business support initiatives such as masterclasses, and digital inclusion and community support.

Staying connected with family, accessing services, and enjoying digital conveniences can be challenging. The Digital Cheshire Programme tackles these issues with practical solutions.

Ann Pye, based in the Cheshire East borough, shared her experience with the Broadband Voucher Scheme: “Our only avenue to increased speed was through Fibre to the premises (FTTP), which could only be achieved with the Government’s Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme and Digital Cheshire’s Top-up Scheme. I’d like to say a thank you to everybody who supported in making this possible.”

This initiative helps people to stay connected to the world from the comfort of home, whether that’s through better access to online services or something like the ability to enjoy video calls.

Local businesses feel the programme’s impact too. Holly Challinor, Founder of Cheshire Botanicals, shared that Digital Cheshire helped the business “function properly” without being “held back by low connectivity.” Faster upload speeds and improved online supplier connections have supported their ambition to enhance marketing and drive website sales—support she highly recommends.
