Thousands of additional homes and businesses in Cheshire will gain access to gigabit broadband after a £43 million contract was awarded to Freedom Fibre in 2024 as part of the government’s Project Gigabit rollout.
This contract will offer over 15,000 hard-to-reach homes and businesses access to full fibre broadband, capable of delivering the fastest speeds on the market. Project Gigabit is a £5 billion nationwide rollout targeted at people and businesses which would have missed out in the industry’s rollout of gigabit-capable broadband.
Following news of this award, Freedom Fibre are undertaking a period of detailed design and survey work, with building work expected to commence early 2025 for phase 1, the first of several build phases to 2029.
How do we know if I will benefit from the project?
Freedom Fibre have published a detailed Project Gigabit webpage dedicated to their Cheshire project. It highlights the key information and some recently asked FAQ’s. In addition, an online checker is being developed on this webpage to enable residents to input their postcode and address to see if they are going to benefit from the scheme or not. Whilst the checker is readily available, until Freedom Fibre conclude the detailed surveys, we would anticipate plans are subject to change and we as a local authority will remain in close contact with BDUK and Freedom Fibre to ensure we can support all residents with their connectivity requirements where possible.

Project Gigabit doesn’t benefit me, how can Digital Cheshire help?
We encourage communities to engage directly with us when exploring better broadband options, our Digital Cheshire team on hand can explore current delivery plans and scope out any potential interventions taking place locally. Failing that, we can help co-ordinate and explore the feasibility of a local broadband voucher scheme and work with you on delivering a successful subsidised scheme. Where businesses and residents can’t currently access a gigabit broadband solution the Government’s Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme can be used to subsidise the cost of installing a gigabit solution.
